When I was using a USR modem to log on with my dial-up Compuserve
Classic account, I had to use a specially-designed 'expect-reply'
script, which I was able to obtain from the CompuServe Linux forum.

Did you test the modem to make sure it was functioning? I did this with
Windows first, just to make sure the modem wasn't hinkey.

When you first booted into Linux with the modem attached and powered up,
did kudzu (or whatever these distros use) discover and configure the
modem during the boot process?

I used kppp (KDE) to dial in... worked fine, once I had the correct
script installed.
