The answer depends on the amount of free drive space you have with
windows. If you can spare 10-20 GB and still have plenty of room for
windows, go for it. Here are the steps I would do:
1. Go to distrowatch.com and select a Linux distro I want to try.
2. Follow the links to download the distro's *.iso file.
3. Use something like the free windows version of Deep Burner
(available from deepburner.com) to convert the iso image into a burned
CD ROM. You do have a CD burner don't you?
4. Back up the entirety of my windows drive.
5. Go into the BIOS of the computer and set my CD drive as the first
boot device.
6. Reboot the machine with the distro in the CD drive.
7. Follow the prompts on the distro install.
8. Go back into the BIOS and set my hard drive as the first boot device.
Most distros will allow you to "shrink" the windows partition. This
can cause problems with windows which is why you must do the backup.
The distro will also set up a boot loader such as GRUB that will allow
you to select at boot time if you want to boot windows or Linux. Once
you are done, you should be able to access either OS. From the Linux
distro, you should be able to access files on the windows partition.
You won't be able to access Linux data from windows.
