To install thunderbird, all I had to do was the following: 1. download the tar ball 2. sudo tar -zxvf <thunderbird tar ball> 3. sudo mkdir /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.5.0.9 (or whatever version is current) 4. cd <folder where you downloaded/untarred tbird>/thunderbird 5. sudo mv * /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.5.0.9 6. sudo ln -s /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.5.0.0/thunderbird /usr/bin/thunderbird 7. From the GUI, change the mail icon in the quick launch area to point to thunderbird. I also changed the icon to one that came with tbird.
