I assume you are still in Ubuntu 6.10.  To install thunderbird, all I
had to do was the following:
1. download the tar ball
2. sudo tar -zxvf <thunderbird tar ball>
3. sudo mkdir /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.5.0.9 (or whatever version is
current)
4. cd <folder where you downloaded/untarred tbird>/thunderbird
5. sudo mv * /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.5.0.9
6. sudo ln -s /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.5.0.0/thunderbird
/usr/bin/thunderbird 
7. From the GUI, change the mail icon in the quick launch area to
point to thunderbird.  I also changed the icon to one that came with
tbird.
