yea that is why i am looking at either trying to set up my own pop 3 server or 
find a company that can provide the pop 3 server.

  My bad, I thought you were having trouble getting Thunderbird working.
  I use Yahoo and they supply a pop server (once you pay them $20 per year)
  to use. I have never known of an ISP that doesn't give either POP or IMAP
  access to email. That being said, you have a Thunderbird issue, not a 
  Linux issue. If you were running Thunderbird on Windoze, you would have
  the same issue. I don't believe in cross posting, but you might see
  if there
  is a Thunderbird group you can post the question to. Also, if you can
  give
  us the URL of your ISP we might be able to find it for you.
