My best guess would be that the problem is a bad sector on the hard drive, or some other hard drive problem, like a corrupted partition or two. One way to retrieve data, is to add a second hard drive, known good and empty, and readable by *nix, and then, assuming that you have a CD drive, to boot a Knoppix CD from the CD drive, which will permit you to then copy your data from the old hard drive to the new hard drive... if the old hard drive is still workable enough.
