Greetings folks. Relztrah here glad to have found this group because
I'm one of those self-confident, experienced, veteran DOS/Windows
guys who naively said to himself, "I think I'll teach myself Linux
this weekend."
Well, I'll spare you the gory details but assure you that I'm still
happily married and drug-free. But I do want to get my feet wet and I
thought I would begin by partitioning the HDD of an old Dell Optiplex
GX100 that I have using Knoppix 5.1. I no longer use this machine and
there is no data on it that I want to save. I read in my copy of
Linux for Dummies that the Knoppix live CD has a feature to partition
the HDD.
I also have copies of Linspire 5.1 and Ubuntu 6.10 which I read
elsewhere are the most user-friendly for newbies. (A matter of
opintion, I'm sure.) I was hoping to partition the HDD of my Optiplex
and load both Linspire and Ubuntu and become familiar with them while
also playing with the Knoppix live CD. (Yes, I realize that in order
to accomplish this I'll have to quit my job, stop sleeping and have
no further interaction with any other person.)
Running Knoppix I got as far as Main>System>QTParted>Operation but
from there Resize is greyed out. Hmmmm.
I can just pull out my Windows 98 boot disk, run fdisk and partition
from there, but I would like to learn Linux from the outset, not
depending on my pevious knowledge of DOS or Windows.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks in advance. I'm trusting I can learn enough so that some day
I'm able to help other newbies...but for the time being I'll simply
serve as a shoulder to cry on.
