Hello Melinda,

I think I understand where you are coming from. I have been using
Linux for approx. 13 years now, but only within the last 2 years have I
been relying on Linux as my desktop OS. Earlier versions of Linux
proved powerful on a "server" level, but was not readily adaptable to a
user level.

I would suggest, just stepping into the world of open source, that you
try a couple of "live" cd releases first to determine if Linux can meet
your needs. Some of the notable distributions for those coming from a
Windows environment:

    * Knoppix
    * Ubuntu

Knoppix has a "close" to windows feel, while offering the ability to run
the whole OS from a CD without screwing up your hard drive data. Same
with Ubuntu, though the look and feel is more close to a circa Mac
Classic feel.

I'd say, try either one, try the apps included, and decide if the apps
included meet your needs. If they don't, then make a list of the
shortcomings, and post here again where several people will be sure to
post the equivalent type of applications to meet your needs.
