I don't know about the recovery mode stuff, so I snipped it.  After it
boots, try hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a text login.  From there, you
should be able to log in and modify your Xorg.conf file.  You can also
try hitting Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill the X process, which should dump
you to a text login prompt.

You might want to search xorg.conf for nvidia and change it to nv.  I've
had more luck with that driver, which is the native X.org Nvidia driver.
