I am a Newbie myself but I will add my two cents. In my two weeks with
Linux,I have tried Suse,Ubantu and Puppy Linux. I think Puppy Linux is a great
learning tool for first timers. You can try it out as a live cd and not make
changes to your computer. You can purchase a cd for $1.95 plus
postage.(You can also download it but the cd was easier. If you download it,you
have to burn it to a cd.)If you like it ,you can install it.It teaches you
about partitions. The language is easy to understand. It's small though and I
want to install a larger Linux. I'm ready to move on.
I'll probably wind up with a version of Suse. There is opensuse,a free
version, and one you pay for.I downloaded an old version. It seemed a little
more like Windows than the others.
I had problems installing Ubantu but I was installing it to an old
machine. It installed with problems but what I saw was ok.
I have a cd for the new version of opensuse coming in the mail. It cost
$1.95 plus postage.I also have a somewhat newer version of Suse Linux,Suse
Linux 9.0 professional, coming.I don't know if my computer can take the
newest. You pay for Suse but ,if you google ,you can get them for less. 9.0 cost
$7.50 plus postage.I think I saw the newer version ,10.3,for about $10
somewhere.
As I said,I am a newbie and can only speak to my experience. You should
listen to what the experts tell you.

No, yes, yes, yes, I think so. :)
Mint is a variation of Ubuntu, with more multimedia stuff enabled by
default. Various distributions that are pretty good at autocnfiguring
and allowing you to do most things you can do in Windows are Ubuntu, as
you mentioned, Mint, PCLinuxOS, Fedora sometimes, but not right
now--they've just come out with a new release and it's got its share of
bugs, SuSE, Vector. All of those are pretty much OOTB (Out of the box)
newcomer friendly distributions.
What do *you* do on a Windows PC? The answer, in general, is yes, but
sometimes, there are Windows specific programs and even if there are
opensource alternatives, they don't work the same way and don't always
have the same functions.
As for the printer, I don't know. A quick google gives me

Hope this helps.

Xander: Yeah, Buffy died and everything.
Willow: Wow, harsh.
