The Linux kernel is very good at detecting hardware and if a driver exists it will install it properly. The problem usually lies detection, but with the vendor. There is an open offer to develop Linux drivers for any hardware for free. However, some vendors are reluctant to release information about proprietary hardware. So this is where the problem is.
Check: http://www.linuxcompatible.org/compatlist3.html for whether your hardware will work.
