Windows is may still be there and fully functioning, depending on the
intentions of the person installing Linux. You don't say what Linux
distribution or what desktop icons appear. Most Linux distros mount the Windows
drive automatically and may or may not put an icon on the desktop. So it could
be there, but not showing.

I would want to know a few things about your computer before assisting further,
but I would urge you not to re-install Vista until you are sure that it is gone.

Where I would start is to look at the fstab file and/or the media folder to see
what drives/partitions are available. If you are a novice then I would stay
away from the terminal and the fstab because it probably won't make sense to
you even if you could navigate to the file and load it into a text editor. That
leaves the file manager and looking into a few folders on your root directory.
You can look in the root directory for the media folder and open up and see
what it shows. You can also try the mnt directory. If you have a desktop icon
that says computer you can click on it. Once it opens you may have another
subdirctory that says Storage Media or File System. If that does not show you
probably have the choice to go up or to it may say Root off to the left in a
file tree. This is where you want to go to look at what drives are available if
they do not show on your desktop. Then you will want to find Media as mentioned
previously.

If your media folder shows any drive folders that look like sda1 or sda2 or
hda1 or hda2 then you can open these and see if any of them look like a Windows
directory. If you still have your Windows drive available then it is just a
matter of getting it to boot. There are several ways to do this.

Another place to start would be to re-boot the computer and see what happens.
Watch the whole process because if you just re-boot and go away, it may be
giving a menu choice to boot Vista, but then will boot Linux by default.after a
short time delay. This is typically what happens after you install Linux to run
alongside Windows. I would do this as a minimum before doing anything drastic.

Good luck!

I know I goofed big time but what do I do now?

I got a disk with Linux free software on it and loaded it on my

computer. One of the other students did it and installed it and has it

along side Windows application program. Now, all I have is Linux and

can't do anything with it? Is my hard drive ruined or can I restore

Windows Vista on it?
