I know I goofed big time but what do I do now?

"I got a disk with Linux free software on it and loaded it on my

computer. One of the other students did it and installed it and has it

along side Windows application program. Now, all I have is Linux and

can't do anything with it? Is my hard drive ruined or can I restore

Windows Vista on it?"

In your Linux installation under tools you should have q'parted or
partitioner or partition manager.
Open this and see if your Windows installation is shown as a partition -
usually HDA0. (1) If so right click on this and on the dialog box that
pops up click on flags, then click on boot. This should restore the
partition as a bootable partition.Or (2)
you can also use the edit button at the of the q'parted partitioner
which will bring up the same dialog box as (1).

You could also try if you have the Windows disc yo boot from this and
try the Rescue option offered when it finally boots (it takes a long
time to load all the necessary drivers et into a ramdisc). This has
various tools for restoring Windows, though in the above case I haven't
found it to effective.

Best of luck,

R Innes
