OS/X and Linux share common roots, but OS/X is a proprietary OS. Linux is open
source. Linux does not run either OS/X or windows programs natively. You can
run some Windows programs such as MSOffice within Linux using a program called
Wine. You will have varying degrees of success with Wine. It runs many Windows
98 programs, but the Windows installers frequently pick up the fact that it
isn't XP compatible and will not run. There are some versions of Wine such as
Wine Doors that give you better chance of success with certain programs. There
is also a version of Wine called Crossover Office which is available for a very
reasonable price. It uses different layers which it refers to as bottles in
keeping with the Wine theme. There is Windows 200 and XP bottles which give you
an even greater chance of success. Wine runs within Linux and programs are
available from either the menu or from desktop icons. You do not need a Windows
license.

You can install any Windows program using VMWare, but this requires a valid
Windows license and the program runs within a virtual machine in Linux. To use
this you first install and run VMWare and then you use your Windows CD to
install Windows XP, then you can install anything you like within this. You can
set aside as much RAM as you want and if you have two processors then you will
not notice a slow down.

You can get free versions of VMWare Server or Player. You will need the server
version to install Windows. This is not for novices as you frequently need to
compile the VMWare's kernel and this can be tricky. The nice thing about going
this way is you can install many different OS's. I have installed Winodws XP,
Vista, OS/X and just about every Linux distro using VMWare. You can also get a
similar program called Virtual Box which is easier to install, but harder to
configure for sound and networking. You can cut and paste and access drives
from the host machine to the client virtual machine in either VMWare or Virtual
Box.

If you want to run games, then I would suggest that you set up your computer to
dual boot into either Linux or Windows. Games consume too many resources to run
inside another OS.

Subject: [LINUX_Newbies] Mac OSX programs in Linux?

Hi, I am new to the group.

I am not (yet) a Linux user but have considered making the switch from

Windows. I hate vista and if I buy a new computer it will NOT have

Vista. I have read several posts on the internet that seem to imply

that some programs written for Mac OS operate natively in Linux. Is

this true? If so, "how true". If so, and this could be perfected it

could be an answer to some criticisms of Linux. One major one being

the "Microsoft Office" issue. Well, if Microsoft Word for Mac OS could

run natively on Linux this would no longer be an issue.

Thanks,

RYan
