Certainly start with slackware, why not? I tend to run Fedora on laptops (easy install, and familiar to me). I run gentoo on the home server; it gives the CPUs something to do (and it is handy being able to change the compile options to include some extra library and have everything rebuilt correctly). I don't know enough about the other distros to offer much opinion. For lightweight window managers I suggest FVWM or icewm. I run FVWM and the GF runs IceWM. Like you, I mostly use the GUI to multiplex a lot of terminal windows:-) Cheers, -- Cameron Simpson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> DoD#743 http://www.cskk.ezoshosting.com/cs/ Mac OS X.
