I suggest watching the text scroll by throughout the boot process. There is usually a key press such as F1 or ESC at the beginning of the boot process. That way you can watch for messages. What happens if you install it first and then add the card later? Does it detect the card? My experience with MEPIS is that it has some good system tools. The networking tool can be found in the System menu, under MEPIS, I think.
Installing any Linux distro on a laptop is an iffy proposition because they usually have lots of proprietary hardware and there may or may not be any Linux support. Dell now sells laptops and desktop systems with Ubuntu pre-installed, so they likely have support available online. Whether they have old drivers is another question.
