You might want to consider buying a book for beginner Linux users.

First, it is a very good idea to have two separate accounts... one for
'root', and one for your everyday use, with just a standard set of
permissions. The 'root' account has too much power to want to use for
everyday tasks.

Second, your 'home' directory is just a part of the file system, that
is assigned to each and every user on the machine (except root), in
the '/home' branch of the filesystem... you might have

/home/tom
/home/dick
/home/mary

...for three different users.

Applications like your browser, are in a completely different tree of
the directory, and because you do have a graphical Desktop, there
should be a Windows-like button on the bottom left of your screen, to
access installed applications.

Last, networking is pretty simple once you get the hang of it,
especially in Linux, so the more you learn about Linux, the more you
will pick up about networking, along the way.
