Except for a few of the 'Damn Small Linux' distros, designed to be featherweight, most modern Linux distros want PIII or better. I have run machines of this vintage with OpenBSD on them, w/o any GUI installed, or the minimal fvwm GUI installed, and it ran Ok for things like a gateway with the PF packet filter running. > In particular, I'm wondering if they would be okay for email and web > browsing, without the user having to wait an half hour or more every > time the thing is turned on, for anti-virus/anti-spam software to > ready the machine and make it safe to connect to the web ? > I did install Firefox on one of these old PII boxes with OpenBSD, and it was quasi-Ok for browsing the web, but it did take a while to load eBay pages. It was Ok with interfacing on openbsd.org pages, though, which was all I really wanted graphical interface for. -- -wittig http://www.robertwittig.com/ http://robertwittig.net/ http://robertwittig.org/ .
