I decided after 2008, I will use Mandriva after Using Windows. Yet, I
don't know what to do with installation. So I came to this group for help.
How did you arrive at the decision to use Mandriva? It is not a typical choice.
Mandriva is not an entry level distro and it is a commercial distro.
I would advise you to consider another distro unless you have very good reasons
for choosing Mandriva. I used Mandrake (now Mandriva) for two years. I found
the support to be weak and the distro was full of problems.
If you like Mandriva, then you should consider using PCLinuxOS which is a open
source fork of Mandriva. It is well supported and it has strong forums. Its
hardware detection is great and it has many of the tools that Mandriva uses. It
installs from a Live CD which is preferred because you get to see if it will
work on your hardware before you install anything. I am not a PCLOS user. I
just think that it is good.
There are several other worthy distros to choose as well. SimplyMEPIS is the
Debian equivalent of PCLOS. Ubuntu/ Kubuntu is the most widely used distro
today by far. It has great support and the biggest repositories. OpenSuse is
from Novell and it is has great support and the best tools. It is also the
slickest distro in many respects.
Mandriva is not a good starting place for a Windows user. Because it is a
commercial and it is not widely used you will find it hard to find support here
or elsewhere which puts you at the hands of Mandriva which is not known for its
great support.
Most Linux is free. There are no clubs to join and support is given freely by
caring and interested users just like you. Mandriva because it is commercial
relies on fees from users. It has a more business approach and they are often
not as understanding or concerned about your problems.
This is my opinion, but I had a paid membership for two years, so I should
know.
