Sorry, I wasn't descriptive enough.

I am using a cross-over cable as my "network" - no DHCP involved.

It also happens if I use a closed loop hub.

I just tried using the GUI for the adaptor, and as a default it chose 
192.168.0.1 but 60 seconds later it changed itself to 192.168.0.3.

The Windows machine was .2, but now I just changed it to .5 and 
matched the gateway and netmask that the Linux GUI wanted. 

I am trying to test the LinEX  utility and initially there is a 
connection, and transfer of information but then the IP address 
change screws it up.
