I am sorry I didn't include enough information.
My "network" consisted of a cross over cable with the other coputer 
at 10.0.0.2.  It exibited the same behavior on a two computer hub.


Interestingly, if you use the GUI utility instead of FICONFIG, it 
suggests 192.168.1.1 as an IP address, which after 60 seconds it 
changes to 192.168.1.3.


I resolved the problem currently but using the 192.168.1.3 on Linux, 
but after a an hour I guess the driver tuckered out and it lost 
connection yet again.

I ended up just hooking up a big USB drive and doing my aquisition of 
a foresnice HD using LINEN that worked.  Took 10 hours, but worked.  
I will investigate the changing IP address next, I want to make sure 
that the LINEN wasn't changing it.  I thought I remembered it 
changing before using that program, but now I am not so sure.
