Servers, by definition, provide services to remote computers.

Remote computers may or may not have 'trusted users' accessing the server.

For this reason, servers are usually 'minimally configured' (running 
only those applications which are absolutely necessary), and are set 
up with a lot of additional security considerations... particularly if 
they are Internet-accessible.

If you are running a personal file server accessible only to a few 
really trusted individuals, on a small LAN, then you can be less 
paranoid than if you are running a server that the World can try 
logging onto (or looking for vulnerabilities to exploit).
