I have tried downloading from different mirrors, from torrent, using
the download manager in firefox 3. etc and get the same results from
each one. Seems to get the same MD5 checksum from everywhere which
doesn't match the one that's posted. Never seemed to have this
problem with any other distros which I downloaded. Maybe just have to
try another distro or try using the live cd which downloaded and
checked out fine. Still trying to figure out which distro works best
for me.

are using. You might want to try another method such as torrent or
using a download manager such as gwget or kget (there are many) that
allows you to pause and resume, plus it can download more than one
part at a time and piece the bits together. In Windows, you can use
Free Download Manager to do the same thing. If you already have tried
these methods, you might want to try an alternative or mirror site
closer to home.
