I am no wifi guru, but like many people here I have had varying degrees of success. You give some hardware info, but don't say what version of Ubuntu. The more recent the better as recognition of the hardware is done by the kernel.
The first thing to do is see if your card is installed. Do a lshw from a terminal and see what it says about your network setup. Then check your settings under network. If your card is recognized and installed you need to direct it to your network. Roaming mode is enabled by default and it may not see your network until you add your wireless network. If it is encrypted (and it should be) you need to know the name, the type of encryption and the key. Finally you need to know how to handle it. Mine is set up for DHCP so I set it for automatic. If you use static then you will have to set it up manually. My Ubuntu has the network manager in the system tray. It has a box for Enable Networking and Enable Wireless. If the Enable Wireless box is there that is good news. Your card is recognized since it knows you have wireless which is a start. You should then go to add a new wireless network and add your info. If not, then it isn't necessarily bad news, just that you have more work to do. There are other tools you can add such as WiCD, Wifi radar and Kwifi. They are made to detect networks in range and facilitate connection in theory. Let us know more about your setup and what your search of the wireless settings reveals. There are more people here with more expertise than I and someone is bound to have your specific card and be using the same distro. If not try the Ubuntulinux group also in Yahoo groups.
