The best thing to do, if you're having samba issues, is to look at their
troubleshooting document. It's usually in
usr/share/doc/samba-<version-number>. There will be a Samba-3 HOWTO
pdf.
In there, there's an excellent trouble shooting section that is quite
likely to be of help.
