I think what you want is single user mode. There should be a grub or
lilo screen just before it boots. Do you know what version of Linux
it's running?

Single user mode is loosely similar to MS safe mode. (Though not
exactly). If there's a grub boot prompt, it's fairly easy. (Actually,
the same with lilo, the older boot manager.

There are also various rescue CDs. These allow you to boot, mount the
O/S and edit various startup files.

However, as this is a commercial thing (I assume) in a case like this,
I'd strongly recommend hiring a consultant. It probably won't be more
than a couple of hours work, and most reputable ones will usually be
able to give you a rough estimate before starting.

The reason I say this is because there are all sorts of variables--you
really won't know what information to give us. Your next question would
be what files could I edit with the rescue CD, how do I edit them? It
rapidly becomes somewhat complex, and I think you will save yourself
money, as well as time and aggravation, by going the consultant route
for this.

One big problem you may have is that if you can't even find their
website, the company may have gone out of business. So, I don't really
know how the key could then be cracked, though I assume there are ways.

I'm not saying this condescendingly and I hope that the medium of a
mailing list post doesn't make it sound as if I am. It's simply that
there are a great many variables. When it first boots, you should
(hopefully) see a message that you are entering either the grub or lilo
boot loader. Once you know that, you can do a quick google search for
grub single user mode or lilo single user mode and get a step by step.

Harmony: Is Antonio Banderas a vampire?
Spike:No.
Harmony: Can I make him one?
Spike: No. On second thought, yes. Go make him a vampire. Take
your time. Get Melanie and the kids, too.
