First off, why are you installing Fedora 8 and not 9, which is the latest
release? Fedora 10 is due out later this month. If it is just because you have
the disk, I ask you to think again as Linux is free to download and burn to
disk. The reason I say this is that Fedora 8 is not one of my favourite
releases. Also, by using the most recent release you get a newer kernel with
better hardware detection and more recent drivers. Finally, do you know that
this is the distro for you?

Linux comes in many flavours. Fedora is just one. It is the Rocky Road of Linux
for some people. It is the bleeding edge for Red Hat and as such it is not
known for its user friendliness for newbies and can be more difficult to
install and use as you are finding out.

In contrast, Ubuntu is the plain Chocolate of Linux. It is not as plain and
easy as some, but strikes a balance between ease of use and features. One of
the features that most people like about Ubuntu is that it has a huge community
(therefore the most support) and it is the easiest Linux to install. In
addition it has Synaptic as its package manager and uses DEBs which means fewer
headaches afterwards as you begin to install programs.

There are also several Linuxes that are plain Vanilla and are even simpler for
newbies, such as PCLOS and MEPIS. There is also Mint (actual name) which is an
Ubuntu derivative with added multimedia codecs, restricted drivers and some
extra utilities.

You also need to figure out which desktop is for you. It makes a difference in
your end experience. Some distributions use Gnome which is more MAC-like and
simpler. Others use KDE which is more Windows-like and has more features. There
are other choices as well such as XFCE and Fluxbox which use fewer resources
and are good for older equipment.

Fortunately most Linux nowadays comes on Live CDs which means that you can run
it off of the CD before you install it. This gives you the chance to try before
you install and to shop around for the best fit. Why did I say that Ubuntu is
the easiest to install? It has wubi for one thing. This allows you to install
Ubuntu by running the Live CD inside Windows. This will install just like any
Windows program. It will install to a folder on your CD drive. You have no
partitioning to worry about. Ubuntu has the installation process down pat. They
were one of the first to use the Live CD to install from. It is the most
straightforward. It asks you all questions up front and you can walk away from
the computer while it does its installation thing or use the computer as I am
now. I am installing the Ubuntu 8.10 beta and am typing this while Ubuntu
installs. It takes only about 20 minutes on my machine.

I realize that you did not solicit an opinion on your choice, but I think that
you need to go into it with your eyes open. Your initial decision can colour
your opinion about Linux and can affect whether you have success or face
frustration. I am an experienced user and I did not like Fedora 8 and much
prefer Fedora 9. Fedora 10 looks good, too. However, Fedora in general is in a
bit of decline. As more and more Linux distros (flavours) make improvements in
usability, Fedora has maintained its bleeding edge reputation. It is geared
towards towards purists and experienced users. This is not a criticism as many
Fedora users are proud of this reputation. I just want you to know what to
expect.

That being said, we need to know what is going wrong as you boot so that we can
coach you better. You could have a bad disk. You could be using the wrong
settings. It could be stalling over a piece of equipment on your machine. You
could have a kernel panic (the Linux equivalent of a BSOD). Please tell us how
far along the boot process you get. What do you see on the screen, especially
the last message?
