I wonder if it's something in the later kernels? It sounds like a tough
one to troubleshoot. If it was just Mepis, then we could guess that it
was KDE and likewise, if just Ubuntu, we could look at Gnome.
One possible thought is to try with PCLinuxOS or another easy to install
Mandriva or Fedora based distro, also with later kernels, and see how
they work. Although, if they work, that's probably not going to help
troubleshoot, as they all have their own little customizations of the
kernels.
