I believe it is a problem with the release. I have had lots of problems with
MEPIS 8 and with some other Debian based distros. The problems are similar and
since the distros have the same core, I am wondering if it isn't part of
something larger.

Like you, I am eagerly waiting for MEPIS 8 and have tried installing it on
several computers and have tried several methods and downlaoding more than once
ISO, all with the same result. I don't think that there is anything we can do,
but wait for a fix.

Some people seem to be doing better than I have because I have read sonme very
goiod reviews, but I keep experiencing problems and hearing about others with
similar problems. And as I said, it is with other Debian distros as well
including Debian, itself. Debian and MEPIS, in particular, have always
installed well on my computer and it has not changed.

Subject: [LINUX_Newbies] Crash after crash

I am having trouble and wondering if it's hardware based. I'm trying
to install and use both MEPIS 8 beta and Ubuntu 8.10. MEPIS will
install, but once installed any window opened will crash within 10-15
seconds. this goes for kded, artsd, and the kicker panel too. Ubuntu
won't even install, because the installer crashes once the partitioner
starts up, same point every time. Both will allow the Live CD to run,
but Ubuntu seems to crash a bit even then. However, MEPIS 7 will run
just fine on this same machine. My hardware is as follows:

Intel DG965SS Mainboard
4GB DDR2 800 RAM (board supports up to 8 GB)
Pentium 630 Processor
Onboard video
Onboard sound (hi def audio)
Onboard GB LAN

I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem, and if it has
something to do with the hardware not playing well with the kernel or
something. The fact that MEPIS 7 runs fine is only adding to the puzzle.
