That, I'm afraid, I can't answer.  Does it work as well as AD?  I don't
know.  

Honestly, I don't know if AD is more popular merely because of MS'
influence, or if it is actually better than comparable things or simply
that everyone is used to MS. 

RH has a Directory server, but I don't know if it's equal, superior or
inferior to AD.
