Karmic is rather old. It is two versions ago. The kernel in Linux is responsible for most detection, drivers etc. and the kernel in Karmic would be something that you would want to upgrade.
You should consider one of the following: 1) upgrade to 10.04, Lucid Lynx, LTS 2) do a fresh installation of the latest version 10.10, Maverick Meerkat 3) enable the backports 4) compile a new kernel 5) a combination of one or two and three Backports give you newer versions of applications, but would no likely resolve your problem as the base would still be dated. Karmic expires in 6 months. Lucid expires in 2 1/2 years because it is LTS, and Maverick expires in 18 months.
