The only thing to watch out for in books and even some magazines is
publication date. Material in Linux gets outdated quickly (although the
fundamentals stay the same, but newbies cannot distinguish the difference)
when the mainline distros crank out a new version every six months.

I don't know how many times I have seen someone post a problem related to
installing a distro version that was a year or more old. You cannot easily
sort out problems when the developer has stopped support for it. At the very
least it limits you to what you have on the disk.

You can find many e-books and magazines on the usenet groups. I don't
advocate it, but if you try something then perhaps you would consider buying
a legitimate copy. There is so much garbage out there that you may be
throwing your money away unless you can preview it or have help in choosing.
There are several good usenet applications in the repositories. I like
Klibido best.
