Do you have any other non-volatile storage?

For all of the settings except fallback/normal storing them in the
flash chip won't be a problem (it just needs a little work).

A serial eeprom might be another good choice, of a location for variables.

Anyway I understand the reasons for it and will happily work on brainstorming
a solution.
