I am tight for time so a short answer from me anyway for now. 

Manpreet Singh has just provided me with patches for memory autoconfig for
the 440bx. 

I will try to commit these today. As his mainboard is not really a
product, I will be defining a mainboard:
generic/440bx

with standard entries. You can then try this out.
