Compaq is hard to work with and who knows what they have done.  Generally you can't change anything on a Compaq.  You get what you got.
 
com3 = cua2

DSL will work great.  You can buy large bandwidth and it's fairly cheap.  I can't get DSL here.  Too far away from the switch house.  With ISDN and compression I will have 520K of throughput which is enough to get started.
 
I can "stack" 3 ISDN lines and then it will be time to get myself a frame relay service.
