hi!thankx for the hints..heres the results..

tried this..still same error

compact doesnt make the map file smaller, it just
causes LILO to read more sectors at a time, causing a
faster boot
after some reading, i now know that "hole in map file"
is caused by a hard disk geometry mismatch. On this
hunch, i tried fdisk , and guess what the output is:
/dev/hda1  windows pri
/dev/hda2  ext
"Partition 2 has different physical /logical ending.."
/dev/hda5  linux swap
/dev/hda6  linux native

and on verifying the partition table, the o/p is :
186 unallocated sectors.

So this is the problem, now i dont know of any way to
cure this, tried the fix and ignore table option with
lilo, but no luck...
guess a reformat is in order!
