Sometime Today, Devdas Bhagat assembled some asciibets to say:
> correct him. It could be a bit more detailed on the tech side though.
> Distinguish between white hats/black hats/script kiddies.
We can hold off on tech until the early message is through. That can be
more of a complete editorial or something. I'll work on it.
> Whenever I say that I hack (minor work, specific one off projects
> only for course work, nothing major yet), I am asked which sites do I
> break into and/or VSNL passwords. How can we educate the media, and
I was basically thinking of getting this to Star News. After Sunday
night's review of the IT Bill, when Sonia Verma and the Expert on Cyber
Law (forget his name) both mentioned hackers and hacking as crimes. Arun
Jaitley however never once mentioned hack, hacker, crack, cracker. He
always used the term cyber criminal or something similar.
If we could get the message through to as many newspapers and TV stations
fast, then we could get something going.
[snip note about adamant friend]
Tell him about astronomy hackers - they don't break into the stars. Tell
him about architecture hackers - they don't break into architecture. Tell
him about music hackers - they don't break into music. Then ask him why
he thinks computer hackers would break into computers?
Then ask him what he understands by the work crack? To break as in: "I
cracked the pot", "I cracked the code", "He cracked the safe"
So cracking is similar to breaking.
Now, breaking into a computer can be thought of as similar to breaking
into a house, or breaking into a safe. So why not say "Cracked the
computer"?
This would at least get him to use crack where necessary.
