Sometime Today, Raj Parekh assembled some asciibets to say:

Your extended partition is a primary partition, and logical partitions are
created inside it.
You can basically have four primary partitions, and any number of them can
be specified as extended. All you have to do is set the media descriptor
using fdisk. Then, create logical partitions inside this extended
partition and you're through.
You will want to maintain one primary non-extended partition that can be
made active.
Your confusion stems from the mis-terminology used by MSDOS. In the MSDOS
world, a primary partition is the first and you can have only one (when in
reality you can have four). An extended partition is not considered a
primary partition although it is - it is one of the four allowed. Your
logical drives within the extended partition are the only things named
correctly.
