Check out DLX. It's pretty good. Get the link from linux.com
NUL Modem Cable. Why not buy one? On the other hand, if you want to make
it, I think all you've got to do is cross-connect the DataIN and DataOUT
wires. I've given my book to someone, so can't check the actual pins, but
you should be able to check that.
NOTE: I have never done this before, so use it at your own risk.
