Sometime Today, Manish Jethani assembled some asciibets to say:

Java is platform independent.  That means it does not depend on what the
underlying OS or hardware provides it.  Regardless of the system you use,
the size of data types is the same.  A char under java is always 16 bits
regardless of whether you run it on NT, Linux, DOS, your remote control or
your coffee maker.
