ACM SIGART Seminar
Date/Time: Friday, July 7, 2000 - 6:30 p.m.
Title: Introduction to Information Extraction
Speaker: Durgesh D Rao, KBCS, NCST
Venue: Lecture Theatre, NCST, Juhu
Abstract: An Information Extraction (IE) system is one that analyses text
documents in order to extract pre-specified types of information about
events, entities and relations, in a structured format so that it can be
systematically processed. For example, we can think of an IE system that
analyses sports news items, identifies items that report results of
cricket matches, and for each such item, extracts the names of the teams,
the venue, date and actual result.
IE combines ideas from Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information
Retrieval(IR), and is a key emerging technology for combating the tyranny
of information unleashed by the IT revolution, and particularly the
explosion of the Internet and the World Wide Web. Sample applications
include: analysis of financial news to track strategic sectors and
players, extraction of relevant profiles from resumes, job listings, or
matrimonials, and extraction of symptoms and diagnoses from medical
reports.
In this seminar, we will understand the basic issues and techniques
involved in IE, and get a feel for the current state of the art.
About the Speaker: Durgesh Rao is a Research Scientist with the
Knowledge Based Computing Systems Division at NCST. His research
interests include applications of Natural Language Technology,
including Machine Aided Translation, Information Retrieval
and Information Extraction and NL Interfaces.
