Window manager as GUI?? Or do you mean windowmaker? GNOME has
enlightenment and sawfish as WMs, KDE has kwm. Afterstep is the
successor to windowmaker (there was a code merge). For a lighter window
manager, take a look at fvwm.
Lots of choices there, make your own.
