If the network card is PCI, you can locate it from /proc/pci

If the network card is isa-pnp you can find out by pnpdump.

For standard isa card I suppose autoprobe is not possible except by looking
at the network card, say by opening the box, or take the risk of loading
modules in the order of ne2k and then others, knowing that most isa cards
are ne cards.
