I installed both - Mandrake 7.1 and Debian 2.2 yesterday, for the first
time (for both). I was utterly disappointed with Mandrake 7.1. It's broken
in many many places. First prob: squid doesn't setup properly.. u need to
reinstall the RPM to get the log perms right.
Second: I just couldn't (and couldn't be bothered to) figure out just why
the ftp server wouldn't even accept local logins. I also smelt something
funny with the network config, but didn't wait around long enough to find
out what it was.
Compared to 7.0, 7.1 is disastrous. I'm writing this from a 7.0
mail/file/mp3/webmail/web/whathaveyou server that I setup a few months
ago... hasn't had a prob since.
As for Debian 2.2: I've been using Linux for about 5 years, and Debian just
appeals to me. I was impressed with the install... which is pretty
thorough, though not as quick as RedHat. It even allows rescuing your Linux
partition incase you do something stupid like practice typing in lilo.conf.
I'm yet to explore further. I'm an RPM man, and .deb will take a little
getting used to ;)
All in all, I've found the recent PCQ RedHat 6.2 CD to be very stable. I've
got 3 mailservers running on it with no problems for a month. This is a
good choice on the "commercial" side. Debian is my fave if you've got some
experience with Linux.
