AFAIK, packet-filters operate at network layer.....
application gateways operate at u know what layer..
Even checkpoint's FW-1 operates below the network layer...though it uses
stateful inspection..
Performance degrades as u go up the layers....since more info is checked...
The Firewalling concept has to be implemented either in kernel space or user
space..both of which are software domains...now...whats a hardware firewall?
