I've had the same experience with uw-imap and the /var/spool/mail way of
doing things. I've upgraded all my servers to Maildirs with courier-imap
(courier.sourceforge.net/www.inter7.com)
I've got similar mail loads - thousands of mails in each folder, many many
folders. Response is near instant.
