[ILUG-BOM] help regarding modem initialization string

hi all          i got a GVC 33.6 k external modem. could anyone suggest me some initialization strings.. ATZ  atx3 and some common ones dont work.. i tried at&fx1l3s2=200 too that was given in chip. works wiht redhat.. doesn't work on slackware and i havent' the faintest idea as to y this happens.. anyway i would be glad if anyone could send me some strings and explain me the reason as to y that happens.. kunal
