Where did you connect your CDROM after getting it back? It was the primary slave
earlier, now which is it? Probably not the primary master, nor the secondary master if
I recall your setup correctly.
So, try doing
#rm -f /dev/cdrom
#ln -s /dev/hdd /dev/cdrom
then try mounting it.
(If I am worng, replace /dev/hdd by /dev/hdx, where x is the appropriate device name).
