Question about ppp

guys how do i configure linux for ppp. like how do i compile the kernel for
ppp support?
when i login and give the command dmesg i get a whole lot of messsges but
nothing bout ppp..if i give the command pppd and then run dmesg i get a
message bout pp dynamic allocation and line successfully registered....but
on closing that xterm and starting another and runnig dmesg again ..it says
that the line is successfully unregistered..what do i do?
