you don't have to recompile kernel unless some malicious person has
reconfigured kernel without ppp support. out of the box, most linux
distributions should have ppp support built-in. also take a look at
PPP-HOWTO in /usr/doc/HOWTO
if you are running a kde compliant window manager, like windowmaker, then
kppp might do the trick for you.
if not, and if you are feeling like doing some nifty scripting, you'll want
to write a chat script - again explained in the aforementioned HOWTO.
