If I read this correctly, you're trying to serve documents from /root/xyz/
For one thing, you shouldn't be serving anything uot of /root.
But if you must, make /root chmod o+x.

I had the same problem this evening, AmitC solved it. the /home/user dir
must be o+x.
If anyone else has better suggestions, please post them.
